Their matings are harem-style, with many mares being partnered with a single stallion (or, as is sometimes the case, a stallion with several stallions, or a mare with several mares, or any combination of between. No one really raises an eyebrow). This being said, not every stallion (or stallion equivelent) has multiple mares, for population reasons, and single male oreilles are fairly common. The mare in question picks a suitor after seeing a display of his worth. While a single mare may have a duty within the herd, and may gain rank, once mated with a stallion, the stallion decides if she gives it up or not. Both mares and stallions are expected to be loyal to their partners (in the case of a stallion, mate with no mare who is not one of his partners).
Both mares and stallions are expected to always follow their Word. The Word is a sort of dharma, a combination of their job, their promises and oaths, and their heart. One who follows their Word, regardless of what it is, is a good person. One who goes against their Word is a disgrace, worthy of exile or execution.
The worth of a stallion is judged by beauty, intelligence, eloquence, honesty, skill in his duty, position, healing skills, and most importantly his Word. Worthiness in mares is judged by beauty, judgment, patience, loyalty, skill in her duty(usually having and raising children), and of course, her Word.
A mare is expected to be able to manage her stallion's land and any assets he has, not to mention their children. However, oftentimes those duties are divided up among a stallion's mares. A mare is also expected to be able to help her stallion make decisions, but not force them. A stallion is expected to protect his mares and foals, to gain and keep rank for their sake. He manages his subordinates, as well as his own harem and children. He is expected to be able to take the advice of his mares as he sees fit, and decide their individual duties fairly.
Their religion centers around a belief in natural forces which make up everything. These forces are not truly personified, but instead worshiped as simple forces, active and always existing, and a part of all things. They believe that the world is made from the dancing of the spirits and that the dance will one day end, ending the world. Then, they believe, the dancing will begin again, and a whole new world formed.
This being said, they do not believe that something can be 'destroyed'. It can be broken down, and it can be changed, but it cannot be destroyed. For them, there are no happy endings, because nothing ever ends. Their religion believes in reincarnation- that when a soul dies, it returns to the 'great sea of souls' and is stripped of all the trappings of their former life. Then, they are born again as something else- anything else. Since plants and lesser animals have souls, according to them, a great Magi can be reborn as a blade of grass, and a blade of grass can become a mare.
Because of this, they are very tolerant of others, as a whole (or at least they pretend to be). After all, when all is said and done, all living things are the same, and a part of each other. Come your next life, your enemy could be where you are now, and you could be where your enemy is.
They believe in a sort of immediate karma--that the good or evil done in a life will be repaid in that lifetime. A good stallion will be treated well, or at the very least find happiness in himself.
Among Oreilles, a leader is generally a Magi- a wise-stallion(or wise-mare). Or, if the leader is a religious leader, he(she) is a Shaman. Most leaders are a bit of both.
A new leader is selected by the previous, and given a test of their worth and skill in leadership. The test is kept secret and private, and it is not known such a test has been taken until the leader has announced his (or her) heir. Most Oreille herds don't move around a lot, and they don't restrict memberships to just families.
Despite the openness of Oreille society, honorifics are in use save for among close friends and close family members.
"Miss" and "Master" for unmated mares and stallions, and foals of equal and lesser social status.
"Madam" and "Sir" for mated mares and stallions of equal or lesser social class
"Lady" and "Lord" for mares, stallions, and foals of greater social status.
When in doubt, one uses miss and master.
A nuzzle is the most common greeting, a combination between a bow, a handshake, and a wave... and maybe a hug, too. When two Oreilles who know each other and are on friendly terms cross each other's paths, they generally nuzzle each other. If one is entering a relationship or deal with another, then the nuzzle is expected. Not nuzzling someone under those terms is a great offense.
Before a Magi or Shaman, one is expected to bow, and then let the magi nuzzle them on the neck.
Wrapping tails around each other is a frequent sign of affection, similar to holding hands or hugging in human circles. It expresses a desire for togetherness, after all.
Touching horns together (or touching your horn to someone else's) is a rather close expression of fondness, equivocal with a kiss on the cheek, forehead, or lips, depending on the duration and movement. A quick touch is cheek, a long touch staying only at the tip is a forehead kiss, and a long touch with rubbing up and down the sides of the horn is like a kiss on the lips.
